It was a busy and action-packed opening morning at the European Athletics Championships, as the very first Irish athletes took to the track and field to kick off their campaigns. With semi-final spots, personal bests, and final berths for field events on the line, the opening session delivered a mix of dominant victories, near-misses, and courageous battles across the board.
English Controls His Opening Heat
Mark English delivered a textbook performance in the opening round of the men's 800m. The Donegal athlete positioned himself smartly from the start, reading the pace with experience before surging ahead with complete authority. Barely breaking a sweat to stop the clock in 1:46.96, English comfortably closed out a controlled victory to book his spot in the semi-finals without ever being forced into top gear.
McPhillips Battles Through Tough Circumstances
In heat four of the men's 800m, Cian McPhillips positioned himself well over the opening lap, but ultimately couldn't sustain the pace over the second 400 metres, finishing seventh. It was later revealed that the Longford athlete has been battling a virus all week, severely impacting his performance on the track. Coming off the back of an injury-interrupted season, showing the fight to get out there on the European stage is an achievement in itself and with plenty of talent to build on, there are still brighter days ahead this season.
Neville Capitalises on Wind Advantage; Roy Just Misses Out
In the women’s 100m heats, Ciara Neville booked her place in tonight’s semi-finals after clocking 11.29 in heat one. On an opening round where the top 12 advanced on time, heat one conditions proved particularly favourable; a heavy tailwind provided significant assistance, a factor noted by commentators as giving the early runners a decisive edge over those in heats two and three. Neville made full use of the advantage to progress, and she will return to the track later this evening for the semi-finals.
It was an different story for Lauren Roy in heat three. Running in less wind assisted conditions, Roy produced an excellent effort to clock 11.32, placing her just a fraction outside the 12th and final qualifying spot. Despite the narrow exit in the individual 100m, Roy’s championships are far from over, with the 200m and the 4x100m relay still to come.
Raftery Cruised into 400m Semis
Jack Raftery put together an exceptionally calculated run in heat two of the men’s 400m. Maintaining a solid rhythm throughout, Raftery powered across the line in 2nd place with a sharp time of 45.81. The performance placed him comfortably in the top half of the overall qualifiers, securing a well-earned place in tomorrow night's semi-finals.
Favors Snatches Historic Final Spot
In the field events, Raheny Shamrocks thrower Eric Favors provided the late drama in the men’s shot put qualification. Favors launched a best attempt of 19.54m, snatching 12th place, the final qualifying spot on offer, by the finest of margins. The result marks a major milestone for Irish field athletics, securing a rare place for Ireland in a major championship field final. Favors will be back in the ring in the final tonight.
