With just under four weeks to go until the 2026 Dublin City Council Dublin City Half Marathon, organisers have revealed this year’s finisher’s medal. And in fairness, it’s not a bad one.
Rather than going down the usual generic route, this design is rooted firmly in where the race ends. The North East Inner-City is the focal point, and at the centre of it all is Luke Kelly, one of Ireland’s most iconic folk singers and a founding member of The Dubliners.
The medal features the Luke Kelly statue, created by Vera Klute, which sits just steps from the finish line. It ties the whole thing back to the area runners will actually finish in, rather than feeling like something that could belong to any race, anywhere.
There’s a nice bit of detail around the lower half too, with artwork inspired by the notes from Kelly’s banjo. It’s a small touch, but it gives the medal a bit more character.
Race Director Jim Aughney said the aim was to reflect the feeling of crossing the line and the connection to the area. Dublin Marathon Group CEO Seán Ó Riain also confirmed the Kelly family gave permission for the statue to be used, which adds a bit of authenticity to it.
The race message, “Run Together, Thrive Together”, captures the streets, stories and community spirit that welcome runner’s home, according to Seán.
Either way, there’s a thoughtful medal waiting at the finish, one that ties you back to the streets, the crowd, and the energy of Dublin's North Inner-City.
